STUDENT RESOURCE CENTRE
About the Resource Centre:
Our Resource Centre has an essential role to play in the learning at Blackwood Primary School. As inquiry is central to International Baccalaureate Schools, the Resource Centre provides the resources and facilities to support deep and meaningful learning.
The space allows for private study, quiet reading, small group work, whole class computer usage and the teaching of classes.
The quality of the book collection is excellent. There are special areas to support students as they make their way from picture books, through easy reading and early chapter books, into novels and finally onto some special books for young adults. Both fiction and non-fiction materials have been carefully selected to support all the different and culturally diverse learners in our school.
Barbara Garner, Teacher Librarian:

The IB PYP approaches to teaching and learning* are:

Every year, the Children’s Book Council chooses the best books for children of the year. The winners are announced in the middle of term 3. (Book Week) Barbara provides special lessons to most classes based on these winning books. Having a really good look at these books, and with special emphasis on thinking skills, means that students understand what authors and illustrators are trying to do and how they do it.
Another of the special ways Barbara adds value to the learning of students at Blackwood Primary is by constructing Learning Trails to support the Units of Inquiry. These are where students access lots of learning centres and spend time making their own decisions about what they want to learn.
