Purpose of Student Voice and Student Leadership
Class meetings
Student Action Team
Senior (Year 6) Student Leaders
Year 6 students apply for these positions. The positions are selected by staff based on criteria.
Student Interest Groups
These groups are formed when required, an example being the school’s Green Team that maintains and develops our school garden.
Buddy Classes
Younger classes are paired up with older classes during the year. This provides opportunities for our older students to develop a relationship with a younger student and help/learn with them.
- Builds relationships between students and their school community.
- Allows students to give input and take action to improve their class, school and wider community.
- Improves students’ skills in listening to others, respecting others’ opinions/views/thoughts, communicating own points of view and problem-solving.
- Builds students’ awareness of how decisions are made and how they impact other people.
- Develops students’ leadership skills.
Class meetings
- Classes hold regular class meetings when needed.
- Classes run meetings as is suitable to their year level(s).
- Agendas for class meetings include a section when Student Action Team members are able to report back from their SAT meetings.
Student Action Team
- Classes have 2 Student Action Team (SAT) Representatives per semester.
- Student Action Team representatives attend weekly SAT meetings.
- SAT meetings are run by Senior Student Leaders and overseen by a staff member.
- Decisions are made, and issues that involve the school are discussed and solved.
- Any issues that require staff feedback/decision-making are taken to staff meetings.
- SAT reps report back to their classes during class meetings.
Senior (Year 6) Student Leaders
Year 6 students apply for these positions. The positions are selected by staff based on criteria.
- School Captains
- Attend Mitcham Hills Cluster Student Representative Council Meetings, developing action/projects in their school such as teaching students about SMART Goals, and building student agency and growth mindset skills.
- Run the school’s Student Action Team meetings.
- Represent the school at school and community events.
- Help organise and run school events.
- House Leaders
- Run House-Team Meetings.
- Help organise and run school events such as sports days.
- Organise and run activities/competitions for students.
- Run the school’s House Points Cup competition. - Language Leaders
- Take action in our school that promotes Japanese.
- Take action in our school that encourages respect for languages and cultures.
- Assist in the running of Japanese events at our school.
- Add Japanese perspectives to our school and school events.
