Blackwood Primary School opened in 1928, with the first headmaster, Mr G. A. Morphett. At that time, the school was located on Gladstone Road, Blackwood.

The Primary school first occupied the current site in 1964, with the Junior Primary remaining at Gladstone Road in the Blackwood Infant School until 1989, which is when the Blackwood Junior Primary School and the Blackwood Primary School came together on our current campus.

1964 was a time when thousands of migrants from Europe arrived and settled in South Australia. Blackwood Primary School was built on its current site to cater for the influx of these migrants keen to begin their new life in a new country.

During the past 50 years, hundreds of children have been educated within the walls and grounds of Blackwood Primary School. Many teachers and staff have committed their time, expertise and knowledge to educate the future generations of our state. Many of our students have contributed to the development of our state a multitude of ways. We are proud of our history and our educational legacy.

Today, Blackwood Primary School is a very different school to that of 1964. The two storey building is still the centrepiece of our school but other buildings have appeared over the years. Classrooms have been joined together to create more space for teaching and learning. Corridors that once ran the whole length of the school are now part of the teaching space. Technology has changed the face of education with interactive TV screens, wireless networks and sound field for voice amplification. The shelter sheds, now fully enclosed rooms, bear little resemblance to their original form. The gym, known as “Ashby Hall” named after the Ashby family that owned the land prior to the Education Department, our Resource Centre and outdoor Classroom area are proud additions to our school since its early years.

Blackwood Primary School is a very special school. In fact, there are very few schools that exude such a warm, caring, supportive, happy and harmonious culture. This ambiance seems to be woven into the very fabric of our school. It isn’t something that can be bottled and taken away or transplanted into another site. It comes from the people within. It comes from the people of the past.

Everybody that has being a part of the school has left a little bit of magic that has become who we are today. We are Blackwood Primary School, a very special school.
