A change to the 2026 Class Schedule

At Blackwood Primary School, we are always looking for ways to enhance student engagement and support effective learning. Over the last term we have been looking at best-practice and different timetable models that will support student learning, wellbeing, and regulation.

Research and our own classroom experience show that students are generally more alert, focused, and ready to learn earlier in the day. By providing a longer, uninterrupted block of learning time in the morning, we are able to make the most of this period when children are naturally at their best for key literacy and numeracy learning. We will also be moving to a model where we will have two equal 30-minute breaks, rather than a short (20-minute) and long (40-minute) break to support student regulation in the yard. Importantly, our new model enables us to timetable specialist lessons so that every student begins and ends their day in their main classroom, providing a critical check-in, check-out wellbeing strategy for students and families. There is no impact on student drop-off and pick up times.

To support students’ concentration and stamina we are encouraging students to have a healthy snack at 10:00am in class and eat their main meal (lunch) after Break 1 (eating time provided). Whilst students can ultimately decide what they eat, evidence suggests that having a substantial meal earlier in the day helps maintain energy levels and focus, especially during the longer learning block. We would appreciate consistent messaging from school and home around this. We will arrange a change in time for lunch order delivery from the high school canteen to support this.
